Filling the Curriculum Gap An alarming gap exists between the growing importance of other world regions to our nation’s economic prosperity and national security and many young Americans’ knowledge of the world that lies beyond our borders. It is appalling to know that 37% of US college freshman were unable to identify Europe or Asia on a world map. That statistic from the National Geographic’s 2001 Geography Survey, is a red flag that as a community we must do much, much more to provide international affairs and geography education to our youth. One of the primary goals of the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville is to reach out to the youth of our community and to promote their interest and understanding of the world that lies beyond our borders. Currently we support the following four student education initiatives:

Academic WorldQuest is a contest for high school students to test their knowledge of international facts covering topics such as geography, political leaders, history, and current issues. With the sponsorship of Heritage Bank and other supporters, twenty teams from the following high schools participated in the second annual Academic World Quest Competition: Bishop Kenny, Bolles, Episcopal, Nease, Orange Park, Paxon, Pedro Menendez, Ribault, Ridgeview, Robert E. Lee, Stanton and Terry Parker High. The winning team from Stanton Preparatory High School will represent our Council at the national competition in Washington , D.C. at the end of March.

ACADEMIC WORLDQUEST FACT SHEET

When: Thursday, November 20, 2008 5:30-9:30 PM

*Dinner will be served for student participants only.

Where: University of North Florida University Center

Participants: One or two teams comprised of 4 students from each participating high school.

*We suggest having one or two alternates per team.

*Only teams with 4 players will be allowed to compete.

Format: The contest consists of 6 rounds of multiple-choice questions that test the students’

knowledge in areas of international economics, politics, geography, culture, technology,

demographics, and the environment.

Each team responds collectively. The evening is fun and fast-paced.

*Each team should create a team name. Winning Team: The winning team will send one team of 4 to

compete in the national program in Washington, D.C. the weekend of April 3-5, 2009.

The World Affairs Council of Jacksonville will underwrite costs of travel and hotel for the winning

team and its adult sponsor/chaperone. *There are prizes for the second and third place teams, as

well as a t-shirt for all participants.

Other: The costs for the evening are covered by contributions from Council members and local business sponsors.

Early College Students:

We will field 2 teams of 5 people, if you want to participate email me ASAP. We will pass out the study materials and plan to stay after school a couple times to practice.

We will stay after November 8th and parents that can help drive and myself will drive to UNF for the competition. Dinner and several free gifts and a T-shirt are provided and this looks good on your resume.

Twenty-two teams competed from 13 area high schools (Bishop Kenny, Bolles, Episcopal, Nease, Orange Park, Paxon, Pedro Menendez, Ribault, Ridgeview, Robert E. Lee, Sandalwood, Stanton and Terry Parker High). Each team consisted of four to six students who competed against other local high school teams to determine which team had the broadest and deepest knowledge of international issues, economics, politics, foreign policy, geography and interesting demographic facts. The winning team fromStantonwill represent our Council at the national competition held inWashington,D.C.in Spring, 2007. A team fromStantonCollegePreparatory Schoolalso represented the Council in 2006. Here is what Frank Bunton, AP/IB Teacher for Stanton and the team’s sponsor, had to say about the experience:
“WorldQuest is a simple idea creatively implemented. The students had a blast, from the first questions around dinner tables at UNF to the national competition in Washington – the cherry blossoms in bloom, the majestic Lincoln and moving Vietnam memorials at night, making friends quickly with Team Hawaii, great food and rooms at L’Enfant Plaza, and of course the challenge and fun of competing against some of America’s best schools. The World Affairs Council, both locally and in D.C., deserves much recognition for their organization of this premier event for high school students.”

Academic WorldQuest is a Flagship Program of the World Affairs Council system. The game was invented by the Charlotte Council and is now widely played at the adult and high school levels around the country. It is a team game testing competitors' knowledge of international affairs, geography, history, and culture. The World Affairs Councils of America started the national competition inWashington,DCin March 2003. The 2006 event attracted 48 teams from all over the country. Participants come from high schools that work with the World Affairs Council network.

It is unique to the World Affairs Council system and has no direct competitor among K-12 knowledge-based competitions in theUSor abroad.

Chapter 5-An Age of Empires: Rome and Han China

WARM UP:
Short Answer Questions
1.How did family relations create pervasive social cohesion in both Rome and Han China?
2.Compare and Contrast the cities of Rome and Chang’an.
3.Discuss the career of Paul and the development of the Christian church.
4.Discuss the role that nomadic peoples played in the history of both Rome and China. How did the settled peoples view the nomadic peoples? In what ways were they dependent on each other. v

Lecture topics: v How Christianity in Rome and Confucianism in China helped define their respective cultures and shape the destinies of these empires. v How two great empires at opposite ends of the Eurasian continent could develop similar social attributes in answer to similar environmental and political challenges. v How the Silk Road promoted trade of goods and ideas between the two empires through intermediaries but never linked their peoples directly. v What factors may have contributed to the fall of Rome and Han China, and what factors may have allowed China to continue as a cohesive cultural system, while Rome eventually evolved into a collection of discrete states.

Compare and Contrast the role and status of women in Han China and Rome. How did women’s situation there compare with that in China during earlier times and with the situation of Mediterranean women?

Discuss the importance of trade to Rome and China. Who were their trading partners, and what was traded? How vital was trade to the economy of each empire? How did each empire view trade?

Compare and contrast the role of the individual in Rome and Han China. How did the individual function in the family? How did the view of the individual affect society?

Use of Documents
5 - Documents are fully integrated into the flow of the essay.
4 - Documents are well explained.
3 - Documents are used in the essay but not explained well.
2 - Does not use the proper amount of documents.
1 - Documents are not used at all in the essay.

Explanation of Documents (Your Own Knowledge)
5 - Great use of outside information used to support the documents.
